Founded in 1999 by Raphaël Colantonio, Arkane Studios is a video game developer based in Lyon, France. The studio is renowned for its mastery of immersive action-adventure games, characterized by rich universes and innovative gameplay mechanics.
The studio's first title, Arx Fatalis (2002), is a first-person role-playing game that laid the foundations for Arkane's immersive approach. However, it was with the Dishonored series, launched in 2012, that Arkane truly made its mark on the industry. This stealth action game, set in a steampunk universe, was acclaimed for its freedom of approach and narrative depth. The sequel, Dishonored 2 (2016), solidified this reputation by offering even more detailed environments and enhanced gameplay mechanics.
In 2017, Arkane expanded its portfolio with Prey, a science-fiction game set aboard a space station invaded by aliens. The game was praised for its oppressive atmosphere and flexible gameplay. In 2021, the studio innovated with Deathloop, an action game where the protagonist is trapped in a time loop, tasked with eliminating eight targets before the day resets. In 2023, Arkane released Redfall, an open-world cooperative shooter where players battle vampires in an isolated town. Unfortunately, despite high expectations, the game received mixed reviews, leading to the closure of the Austin studio in May 2024. Despite these challenges, Arkane Lyon continues to develop ambitious projects. In December 2023, during The Game Awards, the studio announced its next title, Marvel's Blade, a third-person action-adventure game centered on the character Blade, the vampire hunter.
This project represents a new direction for the studio, in collaboration with Marvel Games, and is highly anticipated by fans.
