Skytale

8 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris, 75008, France

An associative studio that proves you can make a great video game without a budget. 80 volunteers, 10 projects, 7 years of adventure.

Description

Skytale is an independent and non-profit video game studio, founded in 2019 by a small group of friends passionate about video games. Seven years later, around 80 volunteers keep the association alive, spread across France and beyond: developers, concept artists, 3D modelers, narrative designers, game designers, composers, sound designers, voice actors, community managers, and legal experts.

Our baseline sums up our approach: enthusiasts who dare to dream big.

Skytale operates 100% remotely and 100% on a volunteer basis, structured into four business units (Creation, Design, Development, Communication) with a formalized onboarding process, an internal upskilling program called SkyHub, and dedicated HR support. The association treats its volunteers like members of a real studio: missions chosen with them, mentorship upon arrival, CV and interview workshops, an annual trip, and a yearly meeting in January to decide the next steps. More than 60 interns have been hosted since 2021, from about twenty partner schools. 80% of our interns stay on as volunteers. Several have landed their first permanent contract thanks to the experience gained with us: narrative designer at Ubisoft, legal expert at Fortiche, senior community manager, render artist at Gaumont.

Skytale won the 2022 Young Volunteer Prize (audience award) awarded by the association Tous Bénévoles at Paris City Hall.

The Last Artifact

Skytale's flagship project is The Last Artifact, a narrative adventure game with RPG mechanics and light-based puzzles, in development since 2020. Built on Minecraft Java without any mods, free to play, the game pushes the platform's limits thanks to our in-house editor: in-game cinematics, voice acting, animated facial expressions, custom 3D models, VFX, orchestral music recorded by the 110 musicians of the European Recording Orchestra of Sofia. Over 300 people have contributed to the project, including renowned voice actors: Brigitte Lecordier, Marie Chevalot, Philippe Valmont, Pierre-Alain de Garrigues (PADG), and Martial Le Minoux.

Skytale Map Editor

The Skytale Map Editor is a modular game editor built on top of Minecraft. It provides integrated tools for cinematics, 3D animation, facial expressions, voice acting, sound design, weapon and spell management, automatic dialogues, and multi-language translation. The idea: make game creation accessible to non-technical profiles. The SME will be released as open source upon the launch of The Last Artifact.

Engaged Projects

Skytale has produced ten projects since its creation, several in partnership with institutions or charitable associations. La Cité des Nations (2021) brought together 100 streamers from five countries and accumulated over 20 million views. BTP Pixels (2022), designed with ADEME, raised awareness among 150,000 young people about construction trades and received the Gold Prize for Marketing Gaming & Digital. Children of Steel (2023) raised €17,131 for Un cadeau pour la vie. At the Paris 2024 Games, Skytale set up an animation at Club France with Medef Sport. At ZEvent 2025, our tower defense Z'Wonder Battle raised €26,218 for associations supporting hospitalized children and caregivers. In 2025, Skytale was present at the Toulouse Game Show and at Paris Games Week on the Pavillon Gaming France.

Next event: Expedition Ivarus, a LAN gaming event co-produced with TheGuill84 and Gaming Campus, which will take over an entire floor of the Grande Arche de la Défense on July 24, 25, and 26, 2026.

Questions and Answers

What is Skytale's main project?Skytale is developing The Last Artifact, a narrative adventure game with RPG mechanics and light-based puzzles, built on Minecraft Java without any mods. The game has been in production since 2020 and will be completely free. Over 300 people have contributed to the project, which features 120 characters, about 20 hours of gameplay, and music recorded by the 110 musicians of the European Recording Orchestra in Sofia.

Why Minecraft?Minecraft brings together 160 million monthly players and offers a complete creative ecosystem. Rather than a limitation, it is for us an unparalleled distribution platform. We built our own game editor there, the Skytale Map Editor, which pushes the boundaries of Minecraft by adding cinematics, voice acting, 3D animations, VFX, and many other features absent from the base game.

How does one become a volunteer at Skytale?Applications are submitted via our volunteer platform.benevolat.skytale.fr), LinkedIn or Tous Bénévoles. You then follow a one-hour presentation on Discord, a 45-minute exchange with a team member and an HR representative, and if the collaboration is confirmed, an integration meeting with your future team coordinator. All our volunteers work remotely, at their own pace.

Does Skytale offer internships?Yes, since 2021. More than 60 interns have already joined the adventure, in various fields: development, concept art, 3D modeling, narrative design, game design, communication, legal. Each intern is supervised by a dedicated tutor, supported with their CV and interviews, and 80% of our interns choose to continue as volunteers after their internship.

Does Skytale use generative AI?No. All our games are made without the use of generative AI in artistic production. Translation, dubbing, 2D, and 3D are all entirely done by humans. This is a public commitment we have made from the start and reaffirm with each project.
